NATURE, CULTURE, IMAGINATION.
PORTOFINO, THE JEWEL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
The Mediterranean sea offers an infinity of enchanting
bays, protected harbours and intimate, fascinating beaches. Portofino-Liguria-Italy
is probably the emblem, the symbol, the name that best conjures up
the Mediterranean playground fantasy.
It is not surprising that this relatively small bay, protected from
winds, which offers few places for tourist accommodation, has become
a stronghold of the elite.
But Portofino is an icon: we visit it, fall in love with it, but then
we travel around Liguria searching, and finding, dozens of other similar,
equally enchanting places. here the weather is always mild, and the
surrounding countryside is perfect for long walks or hiking in the
wild, bushy Mediterranean “maquis”.
Monte Portofino, for example, is a protected area, without buildings,
just acres of unspoilt nature, well-marked paths and unique panoramic
views. We can remain here, up in the clouds, or descend on foot to
Portofino or san Fruttuoso, a tiny, very intimate
and picturesque port, reached otherwise only by sea - if calm enough.
another characteristic of Liguria is the ubiquitous presence of historic
monuments and unique works of art.
Even in the small villages, examples of ancient civilization can be
found: churches, fortifications, castles, large villas, parks and
a considerable number of well-run museums.
Imagination and creativity thrive in this area. The tourist never
ceases to be amazed by the variety of original craft products
found in the small shops and markets: from decorated china for the
table and home to decorative tiles, from fashion interpreted with
particular originality to objects in wrought iron, and a cuisine that
expresses all the excellent qualities of the area: climate, tradition
and fantasy. whoever visits portofino must try “cimino”,
a soup or fish broth, or a “paciugo”,
an enormous ice cream to be half-eaten, half-drunk.
Ligurian cuisine, incorrectly considered “poor”, is good
and honest, and in reality full of flavours, aromas and unforgettable
sensations, so much so that Frank Sinatra, whenever he came to Italy,
brought his favourite chef from Liguria just to prepare him “trofie”
with pesto sauce.
